7950. gada 9. maijā Roberts Šūmans (Francijas ārlietu ministrs) savā slavenajā runā piedāvāja to, kas vēlāk kļuva par Eiropas Savienību, lādei 9. maijs ir pazīstams kā Eiropas diena - ikgadēja iespēja svinēt Eiropas Savienības sasniegumus un apsvērt tās mērķus: miers, brīvība un kopīgs darbs vispārējās labklājības sasniegšanai.
It was on 9 May 1950 that Robert Schuman (French Foreign Minister) made his famous speech proposing what eventually became the European Union. So 9 May is known as Europe Day — an annual opportunity to celebrate the EU's achievements and to reflect on its aims: peace, freedom and working together for the common good.
