Esu dėkingas tą kadenciją dirbusiems Europos Parlamento nariams, tris kartus iš eilės nuo 1977 m. iki 1979 m. (nors tai neįprasta pagal to meto taisykles) nusprendusiems perrinkti mane Parlamento pirmininku tam, kad man pirmininkaujant ir glaudžiai su jais bendradarbiaujant būtų sėkmingai atlikta svarbiausia demokratinė Europos reforma – surengti visuotiniai tiesioginiai Europos Parlamento rinkimai.

I am grateful to the Members of the European Parliament during that parliamentary term, who three times in succession, from 1977 to 1979 (an uncommon occurrence under the regulatory framework of the time), decided to re-elect me in order to ensure the success, under my presidency and with their full cooperation, of the greatest of European democratic undertakings: election of the European Parliament by universal surage.
