Italian word pomodoro comes from Italian pomo (pome, fruit, apple) and d'oro (of gold, golden). It is said that originally in Italian the fruit was called 'pomo di moro' (fruit of the Moors who were often considered to have introduced new produce), which came to be mistranslated by English-speaking historians as 'pomo d'oro' and eventually became pomodoro
